Title:Main Title: TRR228 Metadata Schema for the Description of Research Data in the TRR228DB – Version 5.0
Description:Abstract: Managing and archiving research data in a well-organized framework is an essential task in every interdisciplinary long-term research project. Within the framework of the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 228 “Future Rural Africa: Future-making and social-ecological transformation” (CRC/TRR228), a web-based research data management system, a so-called project database, was implemented by INF-project Z02 to handle all relevant research data of the project. This database should fulfill the obligations of the ‘Good Scientific Practice’ guidelines of the DFG to archive the data for at least ten years and also support synergies and communication between the researchers. Due to the interdisciplinary background of the project, the CRC/TRR228-Database (TRR228DB, www.trr228db.uni-koeln.de) has to store a large number of heterogeneous data, as for example collected research data, purchased geodata, reports, presentations, publications and pictures that were provided by the CRC/TRR228 participants. A central element of the database system is the developed metadata management system. It was designed, realized, and implemented according to the needs of the interdisciplinary project background, the demands of the stored data types and to recent metadata standards. The TRR228DB Metadata Schema is a structured list of metadata properties chosen to describe all data in the TRR228DB with accurate metadata to improve their searchability. It comprises a defined number of mandatory, optional and automatically generated metadata properties. The TRR228DB Metadata Schema is designed in compliance with Dublin Core Metadata Initiative and DataCite (Version 4.3) to achieve the interoperability with these metadata standards. Additionally, it is expanded with metadata elements from ISO 19115, INSPIRE, Data Documentation Initiative (DDI), as well as various properties appropriate to the stored data types and specific properties related to the CRC/TRR228 project background.
